The Garda Ombudsman has begun an investigation into the death of a man in Garda custody in Co Cork.
James Martin Walsh, 44, was taken to Midleton Garda Station at around 6.30am.
He was brought by ambulance to Cork University Hospital after gardaí became concerned about him.
He died at the hospital just before 9am.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission confirmed that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Walsh's death.
A spokesman said the referral was standard procedure in such cases.
The Commission has appealed for witnesses to contact its investigation team, in particular people who saw Mr Walsh between 6pm yesterday and 6am today.
