The Mayor of Clonakilty has welcomed the announcement that funding of €5.4m has been approved to upgrade the town's sewerage scheme.

Sinn Féin Cllr Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin said it would bring an end to a ten-year problem of noxious odours, which have been off-putting for locals and visitors to the tourist town.

The existing plant has been running at over three times its design capacity.

The upgrade, design, build and operating contract has been awarded to EPS Limited and is being funded under the Department of Environment's Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2013.
