President Michael D Higgins has said youth unemployment is the most important issue in Europe.

Mr Higgins was speaking in advance of the Being Young and Irish seminar taking place in Áras an Uachtaráin tomorrow.

It marks the final part of a six-month consultation process with young Irish people on their vision for the future of the country.

The President said the issue of youth unemployment must not be ignored.

In Spain, younger groups are bearing the brunt of the economic crisis, with the unemployment rate at 52% for those aged under 25.

In the overall economy, one in four people are officially out of work in Spain.
