The post mortem examination on the remains of a former detective garda found dead in Cavan yesterday has concluded that he died from gunshot wounds to the upper body.
Gardaí are now treating the death of John Kerins, whose body was found in his home near Bailieboro, as murder.
Gardaí have renewed their appeal to anybody who may have seen anything out of the ordinary in the Cornaveagh and Canningstown areas of Bailieboro between 5pm on Thursday and 8am on yesterday morning to contact them.
Mr Kerins, 49, had been a detective in the northeast, and had also worked in the fraud squad in Dublin.
He was medically discharged from the force in 2009.
He was a suspect in relation to the disappearance of a local man a year-and-a-half ago.
Gardaí also suspect he was involved in the drugs trade and handling stolen property.
