Gardaí in Dublin have begun a murder investigation following a fatal stabbing in the city in the early hours of this morning.

The 22-year-old victim was discovered lying unconscious on the ground at around 7am on St Donagh's Road in Donaghmede.

The man had sustained a number of stab wounds and was taken to Beaumont Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The scene was preserved pending a technical examination.
