Two men are being treated in hospital following an attack on a man in Dublin city centre in the early hours of this morning.

One man, originally from China, is in a critical condition in the Mater hospital after he was attacked outside a restaurant on Capel Street at around 2am.

Up to eight men with hammers, knives and possibly a machete, attacked the man.

He sustained serious injuries to his head, back and leg.

The second man, who is also Chinese, was admitted a short time later, but his condition is not life-threatening.

Gardaí are trying to establish a motive for the attack.

They are examining CCTV footage, and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information on the incident, particularly people from the Chinese community, to contact them at Store Street Garda Station.
