Police have begun a murder inquiry after a man was shot dead last night in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.

Daniel McKay, 36, was shot several times as he sat in the living room of his home at Longlands Road at around 8.30pm.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John McVea said he could not rule out the involvement of dissident republican groups in the shooting.

He said the father-of-one was known to police, but not considered to be a "senior criminal".

DCI McVea said: "Daniel's partner had just left and had gone to the shop next door.

At the time of the shooting Daniel was on his own. Two masked men entered the house and shot Daniel whilst he sat on his living room settee."

Police said they are linking the murder with the hijacking of a Volkswagen car which was found burnt out in west Belfast a short time later.
