Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Kilkenny this evening welcome home the All-Ireland hurling champions.

A civic reception and homecoming event for the Kilkenny senior hurling team and management started at 4pm, with the team arriving the city shortly afterwards.

The team took an open-top bus ride from the Parade in Kilkenny, over John's Bridge, through John Street and arriving finally at Nowlan Park.

Meanwhile, an estimated 5,000 people turned out for the arrival the Galway Senior Hurling team at Pearse Stadium.

Crowds also gathered at flyovers on the motorway waving flags and cheering.

The Mayor of Galway, Councillor Terry Flaherty, hosted a civic reception in the team's honour.
