It has been announced that Justin McCarthy is the new editor of the Irish Farmers Journal.

Mr McCarthy from Portaferry, Co Down, succeeds Matt Dempsey who has been editor for the past 24 years.

He is 35-years-old and an agricultural science graduate from the Harper Adams University in Shropshire.

He has been livestock editor with the Farmers Journal for the past seven years.

Mr McCarthy was widely praised for his exposé on beef production standards in Brazil, which led to curbs on imports to the EU from that country.

The Farmers Journal currently has a weekly circulation of about 72,000 copies.

Mr McCarthy will assume his new post in the spring.
