The Houses of the Oireachtas have issued a tender for the supply and servicing of 300 tablet computers for TDs and staff members.

Tender documents say the move to tablet computers will assist in the reduction of paper usage and improve connectivity and communication with TDs.

The tender specifies that the devices must have wifi and 3G connectivity.

It also requires certain security features, including encryption software and software that will wipe the device if an incorrect password is entered a number of times.

All the machines must come with a three-year guarantee and the tender also requires a technical support service.

No estimate of the value of the contract is included in the documents but leading tablet computers from Apple and Samsung retail at between €400 and €800.

The tender is due to be awarded by the end October.
