Detectives in Australia have charged a 31-year-old man in connection with an assault on two Irish men in Melbourne yesterday.

The two men in their 30s remain in a critical condition after they were attacked with a hammer.

They received life-threatening head injuries during the assault in the St Kilda area of Melbourne.

The attack happened at 1am at a residential address in Lyndoch Avenue.

Luke James Wentholt, who is from the area, was today charged by Glen Eira Bay detectives.

Mr Wentholt was arrested after he appeared at a hospital seeking treatment for injuries a few hours after the attack.

He was charged with two counts of intentionally causing serious injury, two counts of recklessly causing serious injury and other related offences.

He appeared before Melbourne Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody to appear at the same court on 8 October.
