Former RTÉ chief news reporter Charlie Bird is to retire from the organisation after 38 years.

He informed RTÉ management about his decision earlier today.

His last broadcast will be this Sunday when he presents the Marian Finucane Show on RTÉ Radio 1.

Speaking this evening, the 62-year-old said: "It wasn't an easy decision."

Mr Bird joined RTÉ in 1974 as a researcher in Current Affairs.

After six years he joined the newsroom as a reporter, before becoming chief news correspondent and later Washington correspondent.

In a long career within RTÉ News, he has covered stories in Ireland and throughout the world.
