Gunmen killed 16 people after opening fire on worshippers at a church in Nigeria's central Kogi state yesterday evening.

Kogi police spokesman Simeon Ille said that "a group of three unidentified gunmen stormed the church and opened fire on them".

A witness said around ten gunmen blocked off the exits to the church before shooting the trapped people inside.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for several other attacks this year in Nigeria, but this church was viewed to be further south than the group's usual targets.
