Gardaí have appealed to motorists to reduce their speed, as thousands of people take to the road for the August bank holiday weekend.

A new raft of penalty point offences took effect from midnight last night, and gardaí have pledged to enforce the new laws this weekend.

Regional Traffic Superintendent Paschal Connolly said that this time of year is statistically high risk for motorists.

He has called for cooperation from motorists and other road users in improving road safety.
