An Irishman has died after becoming ill while attempting to swim the English Channel.
45-year-old Páraic Casey was attempting the solo crossing to raise funds for charity.
Mr Casey, from Passage West in Co Cork, began his swim just after 9am yesterday.
He undertook the swim to raise funds for St Vincent de Paul and Marymount Hospice.
He was within 1km of the French shore when he became ill, at around 1.30am this morning.
Efforts were made to resuscitate him, but were unsuccessful.
He is survived by his wife Riana, who described him as "loving and amazing" and said his recent passion for swimming brought him to great places.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is liaising with the family and providing consular assistance.
