A review of the penalty points system for drivers has been published.

It proposes increasing penalty points for 11 offences, including those linked to speeding, using a mobile phone, and breaking a red light.

However, it says the points issued for less dangerous offences – such as parking in a dangerous position or failing to have an up-to-date NCT – should be reduced.

Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar said the penalty points system has worked and has helped to make the country’s roads safer.

However, he said after 10 years it was time to review the system and to compare it to other countries.

The minister said he will now consider the report and will consult with the Joint Oireachtas Transport Committee on its recommendations.
