A 19-year-old woman has died in hospital from injuries she sustained when a sand dune collapsed on her on a beach in west Kerry yesterday afternoon.

Niamh McCarthy, from Minane Bridge in Co Cork, had been in a critical condition at Kerry General Hospital in Tralee.

Ms McCarthy had gone to Kerry with a number of friends for a holiday to celebrate the end of her first-year exams at University College Cork.

The science student travelled to the popular Maharees near Castlegregory at the weekend.

She and her friends are understood to have been jumping from the top of a sand dune when it partially collapsed shortly after 3pm yesterday.

A number of local people joined her friends in a rescue attempt, but it is understood she was buried in the sand for up to 30 minutes.

Ms McCarthy was rushed by ambulance to Kerry General Hospital in Tralee, where she died this afternoon.
