Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has admitted that the closure of rural garda stations will impact on communities.

However, Mr Callinan has said he is working to ensure that services for people living in these communities remain.

He also said it is vital that the support gardaí receive from communities is maintained.

Commissioner Callinan was speaking at a briefing on community policing in Dublin today.

He also revealed that the device found in Dublin's Phoenix Park yesterday is not the "normal" type of explosive device that gardaí have come across.

The bomb was discovered in a small wooded area of the park on Monday night.

The device, which was viable, was disabled and the area was declared safe shortly before 11am yesterday morning.

Commissioner Callinan said that investigations are at an early stage and no one has yet claimed responsibility.
