Hundreds of people have taken part in a protest outside the Dáil against austerity cuts and household and septic tank charges.

The demonstration was organised by Rural Ireland Against Charges and involves people from different parts of the country including counties Mayo, Sligo, Galway, Limerick and Donegal.

The group says the State should pay the cost of maintaining and upgrading of septic tanks.

The group met on O'Connell Street in Dublin at midday and marched towards the Dáil.

It is estimated that up to up to 1,000 people took part in the protest.

Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae, Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris and Socialist TD Joe Higgins were among those who addressed the crowd outside Leinster House.
