More than 2,000 people are said to have protested in Castlebar, Co Mayo, this afternoon against proposed teacher cuts in small rural schools.

The organisers of the rally say that any changes to the pupil-teacher ratio would devastate local communities and lead to the closure of many small schools.

Elsewhere, between 700 and 800 protested in Gaoth Dobhair, Co Donegal, this afternoon against the cuts in education.

Teachers, pupils and parents marched from the Gaoth Dobhair Industrial estate to the office of Dinny McGinley, Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, at noon.

Teachers have invited Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn to visit the area to see how cuts in teacher numbers will impact on small Gaeltacht schools and Protestant schools in the region.
