AA Ireland has accused successive Governments of ripping-off people with a policy of super taxes on fuels.
The company said the cost of petrol and diesel has risen to all-time record levels and that high taxation is a key factor in this increase.
It said motorists are contacting the company every day of the week to complain about what it terms the "fuel price rip-off".
According to its research, the price of a litre of petrol has gone up 2.1 cent since last month and diesel has gone up by 1.3 cent.
The AA said a weaker euro and high wholesale fuel costs across Europe are a factor in the price hikes, but it lays the blame at the feet of the authorities and not local garages.
AA Director of Policy Conor Faughnan said: "There is no doubt about the fact that we are being ripped off but the culprits are not the local garages.
"It is our own Government and the policy of super taxes on fuels.
"This began under the last Government in 2008 and has continued under the current Government, which added another 4 cent per litre in the last Budget."
The AA has advised drivers to shop around, buy fuel in litres and not by value, cut down on using heaters, and check tyres are properly inflated to help save on fuel.
