Joseph Kennedy III, the grandson of the late Senator Robert F Kennedy, has announced his candidacy for the US Congress to occupy the Massachusetts seat long held by retiring Representative Barney Frank.
Mr Kennedy, 31, would be the latest of many Kennedy's to enter politics, although no member of the political dynasty holds public office at the moment.
He began his campaign meeting voters is the Fourth District of Massachusetts, stopping at the Newton train station and having breakfast at a local family-owned spot in Milford.
"I've spoken to people from across Massachusetts who believe that Washington no longer works for them," he said in a video posted on his campaign website announcing his Congressional bid.
Mr Kennedy said he would work for a fair jobs plan with a focus on rebuilding infrastructure, a fair tax code for the middle class and a housing policy that stabilises the market.
The son of former Democratic Congressman Joseph Kennedy II would be vying for the seat held since 1980 by Mr Frank, a Democrat who announced his retirement in late November.
Herbert Robinson and Paul Heroux are among the other Democrats seeking the spot. Two Republicans, Sean Bielat and Elizabeth Childs, have also announced campaigns.
Mr Kennedy's grandfather Robert F Kennedy served as US Attorney General and US Senator from New York.
He was a Democratic presidential contender when he was assassinated in 1968. His great-uncles were the late US President John F Kennedy and the late Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts.
Joseph Kennedy II founded the non-profit Citizens Energy Corp in 1979 and later served as a US Congressman for 12 years.
