The Minister for Health has said no single initiative will reverse the trend of obesity in this country.

Dr James Reilly has said he is due to meet representatives from McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken, among others, about calorie posting.

He said people have an entitlement to make an informed decision about what they are eating.

The minister said that if people do not have the information on calorific content, they cannot make an informed decision.

He commended McDonald's who have started doing that.

Fine Gael's Jerry Buttimer asked if the minister has considered having "a Tzar" to raise awareness about obesity. Dr Reilly said that is something that the Government is looking at.

Fianna Fáil's Billy Kelleher said obesity is an epidemic, and any efforts to tackle the issue will get cross-party support.
