A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to three years in prison, with 18 months suspended, for blackmailing a former Fianna Fáil Dublin city councillor using pictures of him allegedly taking cocaine.

Wesley Higgins, from Coolock in Dublin, attempted to extort €5,000 from Liam Kelly by threatening to give the pictures to a newspaper on dates in August 2006.

When Mr Kelly refused to hand over the money, Higgins sold the pictures to The Sunday World newspaper, where they appeared shortly afterwards.
