A protest against septic tank charges took place outside Leinster House.

Around 500 people travelled from Co Galway for the protest.

The group, which was addressed by a number of TDs, say they will not accept what they claim is an attack on rural Ireland.

The protest coincided with a Dáil debate on the proposed legislation governing the inspection regime and charges.

The debate on the Water Services Amendment Bill resumed in the Dáil this afternoon.

The Minister for the Environment said that remedial work on septic tanks will not require planning permission.
