An earthquake measuring 6.2 has struck off the coast of central Chile, not far from the town of Concepcion devastated two years ago by a quake and tsunami, US experts said.

The quake struck at a depth of 19km and was 50km from Concepcion, the US Geological Survey said.

Chile has been on edge since a devastating 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010 unleashed a tsunami and killed more than 500 people.

However there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries after the quake, according to Chile's National Emergencies Office.

US seismologists said it hit at 1.04pm (4.04pm Irish time), rattling Chile's quake-prone Bio Bio region, as well as the areas of Maule, O'Higgins and Araucania.
