The Childline phone help line has said it received 1,387 calls, texts, messages and on-line service from children and young people on Christmas Day.

Childline, which is run by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, said this is a 38% on this time last year.

Childline's Manager, Margie Roe, said there were a variety of reasons children had for contacting Childline, but that the majority of calls were from children who were experiencing family difficulties and loneliness.
