Talks were held this evening aimed at ending a work-to-rule by vets who carry out inspections at meat plants.

The talks between Department of Agriculture officials and the vets' group, Veterinary Ireland, tried to find a formula to end the dispute, which began last Monday.

The vets, who carry out inspections in about 60 meat-processing plants around the country, are in dispute with the department over plans to allow lower paid technical workers to carry out inspections.

It is believed that the work-to-rule has not caused significant disruption so far.
