More than 100 people entered the chambers of Galway County Council today as part of a protest against the new septic tank charges.

The scheduled council meeting was temporarily adjourned as councillors met the protesters.

The meeting resumed after councillors agreed to discuss the septic tank issue at the end of the meeting.

Earlier, up to 500 people marched around Eyre Square as part of what protesters described as an important first step in a national resistance campaign.

The protest was addressed by TDs Éamon Ó Cuív and Noel Grealish, as well as numerous county councillors.
