The Supreme Court has begun hearing an appeal by former Fine Gael politician Liam Cosgrave against the High Court's refusal to stop his trial on corruption charges.

An appeal by businessman Jim Kennedy is also due to be heard after Mr Cosgrave's is completed, either today or tomorrow.

Both men are charged in connection with the attempted rezoning of land owned by Jackson Way Properties at Carrickmines in Dublin in 1992 and the successful rezoning of part of these lands in 1997.

Mr Cosgrave is charged with receiving corrupt payments in relation to land rezoning.

Mr Kennedy is charged with making corrupt payments in relation to the land.

Both men deny the charges.

Their trials were due to go ahead in the Circuit Criminal Court in Dublin in October, but have been deferred pending the outcome of the appeals.
