Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore have expressed their sympathies to the families of the two people who died in last night's floods.

The body of a woman, who has yet to be named, was discovered in a flooded basement on Parnell Road in Dublin.

The body of 25-year-old Garda Ciaran Jones was recovered after he was swept into a river in Co Wicklow.

The off-duty Garda - from Manor Kilbride in Co Wicklow - was swept away after attempting to divert traffic away from a dangerous bridge at about 7pm yesterday evening.

The River Liffey was dangerously high at Ballysmuttan, near Manor Kilbride yesterday evening.

The bridge, which was newly-reconstructed in recent years, had previously been damaged in heavy floods.

Gardaí, the Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team and local volunteers began a search last night. The body was recovered this afternoon.

Garda Jones was a member of the gardaí for four years and based at Stepaside in Co Dublin. He was also a popular member of the Kilbride GAA team.
