A Belfast court has heard that the DNA profile of a Galway woman accused of murdering her elderly neighbour was found on the victim's chin.

The jury also heard that a DNA profile from the accused, Karen Walsh, was also found on pensioner Maire Rankin's body and on a crucifix.

A forensic biologist said the probability of someone other than Ms Walsh depositing the DNA profile on the murdered 81-year-old's chin, was less than one in one billion.

Mrs Rankin's body was found on the bedroom floor of her home in Newry, Co Down on Christmas Day in 2008.

She had been beaten about the head, suffered 15 fractured ribs and there was also evidence she had been sexually assaulted.

Ms Walsh, 45, a pharmacist originally from Galway who lived next door to Mrs Rankin, is accused of her murder.

She admitted to police that she went to Mrs Rankin's house on Christmas Eve with a card and a bottle of vodka but claims when she left the pensioner was still alive.
