The Taoiseach has said that it would take "really exceptional circumstances" for the Government to approve a salary in excess of €500,000 for the new Chief Executive of AIB Bank.

Speaking in Galway this afternoon, Enda Kenny said Minister for Finance Michael Noonan would report to Government on the application lodged by AIB, seeking to exceed a Government imposed cap on the pay of top bankers.

He said he felt it would only be in "extraordinary circumstances" that such an application could be approved.

Mr Kenny said he was awaiting a further analysis of the request by the bank from Mr Noonan.

Yesterday, Mr Noonan confirmed he had received a formal request from AIB in the past few days seeking permission to appoint a new chief executive with a salary in excess of the €500,000 cap imposed by the previous Government.
