Broadband subscriptions in Ireland are up 10% on last year, according to a ComReg report.

There are now over 1.6 million broadband subscriptions in the country, with mobile and cable connections seeing the strongest growth.

In the past year mobile broadband numbers have risen by 20% while cable broadband figures increased by 33%.

However, DSL connections - which run over the fixed-line telephone network - fell for the first time between January and March of this year.

Overall, the percentage of the population with a broadband connection increased in the past year. Broadband penetration rose to 23.1% when mobile subscriptions were excluded, though it remains below the European Union average of 29.6%.

Those still on 'narrowband', or dial-up internet services, fell to just above 40,000, representing 2.4% of all internet subscribers.

The report also recorded a big fall in the amount of WiFi hotspots in the country. Numbers there fell by 20.7% in the past year with ComReg suggesting that the closure of businesses in the hospitality industry could be a leading cause of this.

Last month, Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said public and private investment meant that broadband was now available to 99% of the population.

The Government also announced a Rural Broadband Scheme to try to bring connectivity to the remaining 1%.
