Greenpeace protest at Dublin Facebook officeTuesday 12 April 2011 17.54
Irish Greenpeace volunteers held a protest outside Facebook's Dublin office today, calling on it to change the type of energy it uses.
The group unfurled a six metre-long banner calling on the social networking company to phase out its use of coal power.
Facebook uses electricity providers that generate most of their energy from burning coal to power their data centres in Oregon and North Carolina.
An online campaign supported by more than 500,000 Facebook users has called on the company to stop using this kind of power.
Greenpeace says that IT companies are rapidly increasing their consumption of electricity and that forward thinking companies like Facebook should set an example by using renewable energy for their operations.
