Three men have been arrested at the Smithfield Horse Fair in Dublin after gardaí attempted to seize a horse from a man who gallopped it through the area.

The men were brought to the nearby Bridewell Garda Station. All three have been charged and released.

Gardaí were prepared for some trouble and were in attendance in Smithfield Square this morning. Inspectors from the DSPCA were also present.

Minister for Enterprise Richard Bruton has written to the Attorney General seeking legal advice on closing the horse fair down.

There have been numerous other calls from local businesses and politicians supporting that course of action.

Two men were shot and a third was injured with a slash hook at the event last month.
