The Catholic Parish of the Travelling People in Dublin is to ask new Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn to postpone and review last year's budget cuts to Traveller education.

The budget cut all additional supports for Traveller children in schools.

Parish priest Fr Derek Farrell said it was staggering that the Department had targeted two thirds of the cuts in teaching posts at Travellers.

Of the estimated 1,200 posts that are due to be cut in June, almost 800 are in Traveller education at primary and post primary level.

Fr Farrell said the cuts would effect children who desperately needed extra support in school to realise their full potential.

He said he was talking about young people who may be the first generation in their family to get to secondary school.

Fr Farrell said the great progress in inclusion was now in danger of being undone.
