Diplomatic row - Russian spies had forged Irish passports

Russia has threatened to retaliate after the Department of Foreign Affairs expelled a Russian diplomat in a row over the use of forged Irish passports by Russian agents in the United States, Interfax news agency has reported.

The Department asked the Russian diplomat to leave after a Garda investigation showed Russian intelligence had stolen the identities of Irish citizens to forge passports for use by a major spy ring operating in the United States.

‘This groundless and unfriendly act will not go without a corresponding reaction,’ Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov was quoted as saying by Interfax.
