Gardaí are investigating a car crash in Co Louth in which a 35-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son were killed.

They have been named as Leontina and Ezacheal Covaci of Rivervale Grove, Dunleer, Co Louth.

The single vehicle accident happened yesterday afternoon on the old M1 south of Castlebellingham.

The woman's husband, their three-year-old daughter and another 9-year-old girl, who were also in the car, were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

The three-year-old was later transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin and the 9-year-old girl, who is in a critical condition, was transferred to Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

The man was discharged following treatment.

Louth County Council said the road, which was reported to be icy at the time of the crash, had not been gritted because of the nationwide rationing of salt supplies.
