Kerry County Councillor Michael Healy-Rae has been officially selected to run in the next General Election to replace his father, Independent Deputy Jackie Healy-Rae.

It has been well known in Kerry for several months that the Dáil’s oldest sitting TD was not planning to contest the next election.

The 79-year-old's son was officially selected last night at a gathering at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney.

The selection happened in the same room where Jackie Healy-Rae failed to win a nomination to run for Fianna Fáil in Kerry South 13 years ago.

That resulted in their longstanding County Councillor and former Director of Elections leaving the party and standing as an independent candidate. Jackie Healy-Rae has since been twice re-elected.

His sons, Michael and Danny, are both elected members of Kerry County Council.

Speaking this morning, Michael Healy-Rae said he will rise to the challenge when the General Election comes.
