An Oireachtas Health Committee has heard there is an urgent need for more research into suicide in Ireland.
Professor Kevin Malone told the Committee that there has been almost no research done and this makes it impossible to draw up an action plan.
Ireland has the fourth highest rate of suicides among young people in the EU.
In 2009, some 527 people here died by suicide, while an open verdict was returned by a coroner in another 182 deaths.
