Consultants at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan have said the hospital's Emergency Department is unsafe for patients following the move by the Health Service Executive to cease all emergency and acute surgery.

The Medical Board of Our Lady's unanimously agreed the Emergency Department is now unsafe.

Emergency Department consultants themselves have told the HSE that they consider their workplace unsafe for patient care.

They also said that the hospital's Major Emergency Plan, which would be implemented following a large scale incident, no longer exists.

Last week the HSE announced the ending of all acute and emergency surgery in Our Lady's Hospital following clinical advice, which said there was not enough patients to ensure the skills of the surgeons.

Patients now have to be transferred to hospitals in the region or in Dublin for surgery.
