The Labour party has called for spending on sport to be refocused from capital to current spending.
It has also called for Physical Education to become a Leaving Certificate subject.
The party's Spokesperson on Sport, Mary Upton, said €725m had been spent on the sports' capital programme, but that future State funding should be prioritised at getting people active in existing facilities.
Launching Labour's new policy document, 'A Level Playing Field', Ms Upton also said that each school should provide at least two hours of Physical Education a week.
She also said the party pledged to reopen the Local Authority Swimming Pool Programme.
Speaking at the launch of the document, Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said you would have to be 'very brave' to predict that the Government will last until Christmas.
Mr Gilmore noted that there were a number of very tight votes in the last Dáil session, including one on a financial motion.
He said he had no doubt the Government would want to continue in office, but claimed that this was contributing to the political uncertainty affecting the country.
The Labour leader said the sooner there was a General Election the better, and once again categorically ruled out going into government with Fianna Fáil after the election, no matter who led the party.
