Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Eamon Ryan has rejected claims that a 5% rise in electricity prices will result in job losses.

Representative groups for small businesses say the public service obligation levy, which comes into effect next month, will further push up the costs of hard-pressed firms.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Ryan said electricity prices had come down by up to 30% in recent years, which had actually improved the competitiveness of Irish businesses.
