The Canadian Coast Guard has said that a fuel tanker has run aground in Canada's far north, carrying nine million litres of diesel fuel that risk spilling into the Arctic waters.

A coast guard spokesman has said that no leaks from the tanker have yet been detected.

The ship struck a sand bank in the Northwest Passage, southwest of the town of Gjoa Haven in Canada's Nunavut territory yesterday.

It was carrying fuel to resupply remote communities in the region.

An official has said that authorities and the ship's owner Woodward's Oil will attempt to float it off the sandbank.
