The principal of a Cork primary school at the centre of a TB outbreak has confirmed that the school will be reopening on Monday 6 September.

Denis O'Sullivan of Ballintemple National School said teaching staff were in today to prepare for next week's reopening.

When asked about the TB outbreak, Mr O'Sullivan said the HSE is managing the situation and the school is acting on its advice.

Mr O'Sullivan said that they are all looking forward to getting the new school year under way, albeit a week late.

Five active cases and 20 latent cases of TB in children have been identified. Two of the children are in last year's first class and three are in last year's third class.

So far, 120 staff and pupils have been screened by the HSE. Screening of the remaining 100 is under way and should be finished this week.

HSE Public Consultant Dr Margaret O'Sullivan said that any child returning to school, who has been diagnosed with active TB, is on treatment and not currently infectious.

Children with latent TB are not infectious and have all been advised regarding a course of preventative treatment.
