New figures show that more than 800 people a week gave up private health insurance in the second quarter of this year.
The figures from the Health Insurance Authority show 10,000 people did not renew their health insurance cover in the three months to June.
In total, 27,000 have now left the private health insurance market since the beginning of the year.
