A small passenger plane has crashed in Nepal, killing 14 people on board, including six foreigners.

An official said the plane was returning to the capital Kathmandu after failing to land in Lukla in the east of the country because of bad weather.

Lukla is the gateway to Mount Everest.

Home Ministry official Jayamukunda Khanal said four US citizens, one Japanese national and one other foreigner whose nationality is not known were among the dead.

Mr Khanal said rescue teams had been dispatched but heavy rain and the remoteness of the area were hampering the operation.

The 550m long sloping airstrip at Lukla perched on a hillside 2,757 metres above sea level is considered one of the most difficult landings in the world.

The last major accident there was in 2008 when a Twin Otter plane carrying 18 people crashed at Lukla killing everyone on board.
