Speaking on RTÉ Radio's News At One, Education Minister Mary Coughlan said she hoped to see an incentive for Mathematics in place by 2012 with the introduction of bonus points.
Minister Coughlan was speaking after some employer representative groups again expressed concerns about the failure rates in Maths.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Ireland, which represents more than 600 US companies here, said that the continuing failure rates in subjects such as Maths, Chemistry and Physics was disappointing considering the focus on developing a smart economy.
Minister Coughlan said the Government would evaluate concerns about the science subjects to see how more students could be encouraged to study them.
She said she was encouraged by the results in the pilot study in Project Maths, which was an examination subject for the first time this year.
The minister said the Government was going to roll out Project Maths across the country this year, which would be challenging for teachers and students as they would have to deal with different methodologies.
The Leaving Certificate results are available directly from schools and have been available to access online since midday.
Meanwhile, in a report prepared for Ms Coughlan into errors this year in a Leaving Certificate Accounting paper and a Junior Certificate Business Studies paper, the State Examinations Commission has concluded that students suffered no disadvantage as a result.
There was controversy in June when some Leaving Certificate candidates received an incomplete Accounting paper.
There was further controversy when the numbers in a Junior Cert Business Studies cash flow question would not add up.
In the report to the minister, the SEC said it received a large number of complaints from candidates and their parents saying they were disadvantaged as a result of the Accounting paper error.
But the SEC says a comparative review of candidates' work shows no evidence of any negative or positive impact.
Results are available on the SEC website.
College place offers through the CAO system will be made next week.
