In a statement, the HSE said the ongoing review had identified a number of concerns regarding the consistency of meeting the necessary standards for laparoscopic - or keyhole - surgery.

Today's decision, it said, is being taken in the interests of patient safety.

Management at the hospital is making alternative arrangements for patients who are already scheduled for such surgery.

The HSE says two to three patients a week would have undergone keyhole surgery in the hospital for treatments such as hernia repair and the removal of gallstones.
